Animation Bootcamp | School of Motion

A collection of videos created during the Animation Bootcamp course with the School of Motion, a 3 month intensive course that I undertook in 2020.

The Ministry Of Eye Control

Surrender Your Eyeballs.

A case study exploring the animation concept of ‘Eye Trace’, a powerful tool which is basically the process or art of directing the viewers eyes across the screen to the right place at the right time, hence the notion throughout the animation of ‘controlling the eye’. This was originally an assignment as part of the Animation Bootcamp course I took through the School of Motion before it grew wings.

I hope this brings pleasure to your juicy eyeballs.

Circle Society

Be there or be square!

A case study exploring reinforced motion by using layers of animation to reinforce the direction of movement to give a scene a sense of momentum.

Disclaimer: The Circle Society doesn’t condone the discrimination of squares in any way. We just don’t like to be around them.

Mortal Pong-Bat

Kinda like if Mortal Kombat and Ping Pong had a baby…

A case study exploring the animation principles of “anticipation, overshoot & follow-through” while paying tribute to one of my favourite games to come out of the 90s and still be a hit today, Mortal Kombat.

Pool Nudl

Choose your weapon.

A case study exploring the animation principles of “Follow-Through” in a fun and bendy style of animation. Kinda makes me feel like getting wet!

Cow Blast

No cows were harmed in the making of this film.

A fun little case study exploring the animation principles of “Anticipation and Overshoot” which are applied in this case in a technical / mechanical fashion as we lock onto the target. I think it's UFO Steak Night tonight!

Mister Ball-Box

Every ball needs a box.

A case study exploring the animation principles of “Anticipation and Overshoot” in a fun and springy style of application. If ever you have any loose balls to take care of, you know who to call.

Life in 2020 - Lost in Spacing

It’s a metaphor.

A case study exploring the control in contrast of speed of an object moving along a path by use of the Speed Graph in After Effects and paying careful attention to the ‘animation spacing’ of the paper aeroplane.

As this paper aeroplane tries against all odds to not burst into flames as it dodges fireballs above a bed of lava, I was trying to draw an analogy in the name “Life in 2020” by how difficult it was to avoid getting sick during the covid epidemic in 2020.

The 4 Easy Steps For Successful Living - Explainer

Life advice.

This fun, dynamic and design focused animation was originally an assignment called Step 3 that explored the art of smooth transitions from the Animation Bootcamp course I took from the School of Motion. In the assignment, we were only given the storyboards for steps 1, 2 and 4 only, so I came up with the idea for Step 3 and created the vector assets in the same style. I also came up with the concept and design for the typographic lockups for the intro and outro, and then ended up tweaking most of the design in some way to suit the new look I gave it.

(DISCLAIMER: I’m probably not the best person to come to for life advice…)

Brain Hole

Making the ordinary, extraordinary.

This animation exercise was all about turning a boring design and logo into dynamic and engaging piece of animation with imagination straight from the brain hole and using animation principles such as squash & stretch, anticipation and overshoot, secondary animation and all that good stuff, it’s fun to see how much life we can breath into an otherwise ordinary design.
